Abstract

Within the clinical and surgical routine of small animals, traumas are very common. Traumatic abdominal hernias occur when the contents of the abdominal cavity move through a hole acquired through trauma. They can be called eventrations when there is rupture of all muscular layers of the cavity wall, with the exception of the skin, thus keeping the viscera lodged in the subcutaneous tissue. The etiology of abdominal trauma resulting in events is varied, and among the main causes are automobile accidents and animal interactions. In dogs and cats, the most affected region is the ventrolateral abdominal region, resulting in inguinal and prepubic eventrations. The main clinical sign is the asymmetry of the abdominal contour caused by the viscera lodged in the subcutaneous tissue, and the diagnosis is based on the history of trauma, clinical signs, physical examination, and radiographic and ultrasound imaging tests. Treatment, generally, is based on reducing the contents to the abdominal cavity and surgical correction of the defect by approximating and synthesizing the edges. The present work aims to report and discuss a case of traumatic caudoventral abdominal eventration in a pinscher canine, which underwent surgical correction, emphasizing the clinical and surgical aspects, as well as the patient’s favorable prognosis given the therapeutic approaches used.
