Abstract

Castration is one of the most common surgeries performed by the equine practitioner. Different surgical techniques can be used for this purpose. In the field, the open, closed, and semiclosed techniques are routinely employed, each one with its advantages and disadvantages. Besides the different techniques, the procedure can be performed with the horse standing or in recumbency. As important as the right technique and positioning chosen for each case, postoperative care is essential to prevent or minimize complications. In this article, the different techniques, positioning, and postoperative management regarding equine castration in the field are discussed.
