Extraction of incisor tooth in Pan troglodytes (chimpanzee) – case report

Abstract
Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are primates endemic to the African continent, with gregarious, terrestrial, and omnivorous habits. The species is commonly housed in zoos around the world. Wild animals under human care are routinely subjected to veterinary examinations, both for preventive and or therapeutic purposes. Oral cavity lesions in wild animals remain poorly studied, despite the wellestablished link between nutrition and oral health. In non-human primates (NHPs) kept under human care, various dental problems have been reported, including trauma, abrasion, erosion, resorption, and premature wear. A 40-year-old adult chimpanzee from the Quinzinho de Barros Municipal Zoological Park, in the city of Sorocaba, São Paulo, underwent a routine check-up and was found to have a lesion in the lower left incisor, which required extraction. This article reports on the extraction procedure of an incisor tooth in a chimpanzee under human care.
