Abstract

Equine castration is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by the equine practitioner in the field. The main reasons for performing the procedure include the termination of the reproductive ability in unsuitable horses for breeding and the ease of management of castrated horses. The majority of horses are castrated between one and two years old. A thorough clinical exam performed before the procedure is paramount to an adequate surgical planning, correct choice of surgical technique and prevention of complications. A clear-cut communication of possible complications to the owner beforehand ensures a good veterinarian/owner relationship. In this first article regarding equine castration, indications, possible risk factors and preoperative considerations related to the techniques commonly employed in the field are presented.
