Abstract

A case of immune-mediated polysynovitis secondary to enterocolitis is reported in a foal. Clinical exam showed depression, diarrhea and joint enlargement in all members. Microbiological and cytological examination of the synovial fluid revealed non-septic synovitis. Due to progressive debilitation the foal was euthanized. Multifocal ulcerative colitis, mesenteric Iymphadelútis, pulmonar congestion with focal abscess and enlargement of joint capsules were all observed at necropsy. The present report draws attention to the unusual occurrence of immune-mediated polysynovitis in foal, caused by Rhodococcus equi, secondary to severe enterocolitis and rnesenteric lymphadenitis, probably produced by immunecomplexes deposits present in the joints.
